Greetings, and thank you so much for your diligence here!

I will try to get to looking at this, but my GCL time at the moment is
spent in the experimental branch on compiler and function
improvements.  I'm hoping to migrate this branch to CVS head before a
Debian package release.   I'll try to summarize the progress in a
subsequent post when things are more settled.
