reading my own mail with another program shows... that what I have seen
typed got sent. SO the issue is typing.

Interestingly, I was able to make the issue disappear by unsetting my
LANG env. variable.

LANG=C.UTF-8

then it works. But I set this locale months, years ago and always worked :)
