Can you submit about a 60 second capture file of your GPS output?
Hopefully with a nix of NO FIX, 2D and 3D fixes?  I'll add it to
the 'scon check' so we can see how changes affect your application.

I Just pushed a simple update to your patch.  It looks for the longer
GPVTG that has the mode field that your GPS lacks.  I commented out
where it does the MODE_SET, but that is easy to undo.

Now we are down to the essential issue that needs fixing: getting the
report to not clobber other, better ata (mode, eps, etc.).

My guess is that we'll have to dig into the cycle detetion logic in
nmea_parse() to get a good solution.  Yes, it is funcky in there, but
it is not black magic.

Also, did you have any luck replacing the deprecated GPGGA in your
GPS output
