Thanks a lot!  So it seems to be really a bug in many non-GNU versions
of troff.  I'll document it eventually.

Just curious:  What does

  .de xx
  \\$1
  .br
  ..
  .
  .xx "$""\&"""
  .xx "$""\&""\&"

produce on those `buggy' troff versions?
