Right.  An exception I had in mind was this bit of zsh tomfoolery...

        % touch a b c
        % foo=*
        % typeset -p foo
        typeset foo='*'
        % setopt GLOB_ASSIGN
        % foo=*
        % typeset -p foo
        typeset -a foo=( a b c )

...but of course that's not POSIX-conformant, and it requires
a nondefault option besides.
