GZIP on Solaris 2.6

I'm trying to install GZIP 1.2.4 on a fairly vanilla Solaris 2.6, and run
into problems with 'make'. I run './configure' with the only problem
reported being "nm: conftest.o: No such file of directory". I then try to
run 'make', and get the following ouput:

cc -c -D_POSIX_SOURCE=1 -D_POSIX_1_SOURCE=2 -D_MINIX=1 -DHAVE_UNISTD_H=1 -DV
OID_CLOSEDIR=1 -DRETSIGTYPE=int -Dsize_t=unsigned -DNO_OFF_T=1  gzip.c
/usr/ucb/cc:  language optional software package not installed
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `gzip.o'

Would anyone be able to offer help installing on Solaris 2.6????
