Mea culpa.  Despite the advice that it was a bad idea, I turned on the
"ident" feature.  Later, I turned it off again.  No big surprise that
this feature causes trouble.

Sorry about the extra work.  I suggest just checking out a fresh copy
and merging your changes into it.
