It might be of interest; I've just solved the problem.
In ubuntu-9.10-64bit OS is present /usr/lib32
'apt-get install libmhash2' didn't work, because it's using
libmhash2_0.9.9-1build1_amd64.deb

On a partition with Ubuntu-9.04-32bit OS I installed the same
"mit-scheme-20090107-ix86-gnu-linux.tar.gz" (as well as libmhash2) -
scheme started OK.

Then I just cp libmhash.so.2 to /usr/lib32 and that's it, now scheme
is working on my 64bit OS.

Thanks for reminding about "32-bit libraries on a 64-bit system".
