I'm happy to remove support for blowfish, mhash, and mcrypt. They were reasonable choices at the time but that's at least 15-20 years ago now.

I'd like to retain support for MD5, however it's done. This is still useful for non-cryptographic purposes.

Yes, of course.
 
That said, I am pretty well acquainted with what goes into crypto
implementation.

It sounds like you do.  Thank you in advance for doing the work.  I have several [ersonal projects that would benefit from easy access to good, simple crypto.
