Aha... AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR has to be used before AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE

That works... the AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR statement has to happen prior to
AC_INIT_AUTOMAKE, maybe it was a newbie error on my behalf.
