Hi David:Thanks for pointing this out. I am starting work on a semi-automated system to take care of the IceCat free add-on list. It will use the AMO API to get an updated list of add-ons with free licenses, then Fossology to analyze each file automatically, and finally a human to take a look at the results, investigate further if necessary, and either accept or reject the add-on. This is a bit of work to get it done, and my priority so far is to prepare the next version of IceCat, which will come out shortly.
Does all this make sense to you? I believe this would do a much better job of addressing the issue you are raising in your message.
Thanks, Loic On 05/03/2012 06:55 PM, David Pierce wrote:
Is the addon page updated and maintained by scripts or manually curated, and how do you determine the integrity of the extensions you recommend overtime? I ask this because the developer of the "ReloadEvery" extension has previously included a proprietary and rather intrusive spyware module with and update to the extension in an effort to monetize his software and violate his users' trust and privacy. It was eventually removed after numerous complaints and bad reviews in the extension's feedback area. The developer later stated that he was surprised that his users would object to his violating of them and his belief that such actions would be welcomed. Even with this particular module being eventually removed, the threat from such unscrupulous developers taking similar action in the future and the GNU Project promoting them remains.
