Hi Marcu

All very valid musings - tired or otherwise :)

I chatted to Sam and Sarah this morning and we thought it would be really nice to send him a copy. We didn't decide who would do it yet. We will also make clear that its not finished and so we thought that this once we'll send him a printout now and when its done we'll send him a real copy. Of course if all his classmates decide this is a winner plan we are in trouble though it would be an ego boost. Anyway he'll
get a book - not sure how exactly yet.

Here is a summary of where we stand regarding printing, money etc.

Last year we were contacted by a printer in SA because he liked the project. He gave us some quotes for printing bound, hard-cover versions in black and white
with a colour cover. Basically its :
R20 per copy for bulk printing (3000+ copies) -> about $3 per copy
R40 per copy for print on demand -> about $6 per copy

We haven't done much more on this front - but at least we know that by removing the author's, publisher's and editor's royalties we can reduce the cost by an order of
magnitude.

We applied to become a Non-Profit Organisation in SA in August or September last year. Spencer attempted to follow this up ealier this week. Once we get our NPO number we can open a bank account and raise money with more security. Unfortunately its impossible to know
exactly when we'll get our registration number.

On the fundraising front we have an application form for the DG Murray Trust. We met their rep (who was very positive about us applying to them) at the Shuttleworth Innovation Bazaar. Their deadline is 21 January and Sarah and I have a rough draft of the application. (Let me know if you'd like to get involved in working on the funding
proposals)

We have also thought about applying for this:

My thoughts were to get soem funding from a large organisation then use it for a pilot distribution. The publicity will be useful when we broaden our fundraising drive.

I agree that it would be awesome to have money for cases like our Nigerian fan.

Cheers,

Mark

So we really can make a difference ... see forwarded message :)

Has anyone responded and or sent a copy to this person? If not I am
willing to make a one off charitable donation from here!

Ignoring requests like this would be very bad publicity for the
project. But also sending books to many people is not really a viable
option either! Do we (FHSST) have a position on this?

A possible solution might be:

The project has been set up as an official charity in South Africa
right? Has this been finalised? You will need money and will probably
have a bank account!

From the web site we could ask for charitable donations: bank details
displayed, PAYPAL account, etc

Some of this money could be ear marked for cases like above, which get
dealt with by another web page. People could add their email addresses
to it, we then contact them for their postal details as the money is
available. First person on the list gets the first copy, second person
gets second copy, ...

But we clearly need to state that we do not have much funds and that
it could take a long time to arrive!

Do I remember talk of a publisher somewhere on these lists? Or is that
a figment of my very tired mind? This email could be regarded as
random musings and thinkings after a very hard and long day. Excuse
them if they are not appropriate! But these thoughts should be
considered at some point in the future if we (FHSST) are to become
serious about getting access to as wide and audience for our books as
possible!
