I finally got round to trying this out (I've been on holiday for a
week) - alas, none of the above work - I'm still getting the same
error.

No, again, running as root I get the same error.

This works fine - thanks. I'd still like some ideas as to why it's
not working without jack, however... Any thoughts?
BTW, I got jack working with the following command-line, taken from
one of the examples in the jack user documentation:
jackd -v -R -d alsa -d hw:0 -r 44100 -H -p 512
