Fairlu common.  I prefer the socket method.

Systemd(umb) is not preferred, but can work.

gpsd needs both GPS input and pps.  You have no GPS device, so gpsd will
do nothing.

gpsmon is unmaintained, and was only for developers.  Please use cgps, xgps, 
etc.

Oh, my.  3.17 is 6 years old!  Update to something from this decade.

Next time, save yourself a lot of work and just run gpsdebuginfo and
send us the results.
