I think I can handle this problem in a somewhat roundabout manner:
Since it is possible to nest section to an arbitrary depth, I'll just do so,
with section numbering turned off. I will let my XML-to-Lout filter add
section numbers as needed.
Easy to do, and it should suffice for my needs.
