Well, surprisingly, viewing the EPS file with GNU gv or Evince (which
both use Ghostscript) shows the right pattern, though it looks
“pixelized”.  Viewing the PDF file shows the wrong pattern.

Yes, that’s right!

Perhaps we need something like ‘texture { random }’ then?  :-)
