I think so too, but am not totally certain if it's redundant in a
'portable' sense. Will put that back on my list to check.

that's fine (it'd also be fine to simply remove the obsolete stuff - it is
only the top-level Makefile.old that contains interesting legacy information).
I have a script that does that, but haven't applied it to the distribution
out of concern that people have grown attached to the non-configure scheme.
