I just did it again to be sure, and came up with the same result.
This is on Solaris2.6, compiling with gcc2.7.2.3, Lynx 2.7.1ac-0.98.
The errors, config.log, etc., I already posted:

PS In the mean time, how does one force the configure for zlib to
build a static library?
