It's a glob (shell pattern), as I understand it.
The NEWS file suggests it would be a shell pattern, but the--help output says ... well, both:| pull [ADDRESS[:PORTNUMBER] [PATTERN]] | pull branches matching REGEX from netsync server at ADDRESS
I think that goes under the expression "oops" :-).
