Jack's post provides a lot of suggestions on most of your questions.  I 
generally use monotone in the same way the monotone project does except 
I name my branches in the URL style (address@hidden/branch or 
matt-land.com/branch).

As for the number of local databases to keep around, I generally have 
one per project.  So I have one for monotone, one for my website...
