Please note that I'm working on n.v.m.cvsimport-branch-reconstruction. 
There I'm still using a similar, low-level database interface.

I also dislike that idea. Mainly because it wouldn't solve any real 
problem, because a database abstraction layer would not help the issue 
of monotone expecting exclusive access to the database.
