I started over after compiling and installing mtn 0.99.1.
I configured, compile, and ran the check and it passed, ending up 
by saying:

Test finished.
PASS test1
PASS: test/run-tests.sh

1 test passed
=============
make[1]: Leaving directory `/farhome/hendrik/dv/usher/usher-0.99'
