There does appear to be a limit on large files. The problem developed when a 6 GB file was downloaded to the system. Once this file was removed and the associated backup file for it (which ironically, was only about 5.3 GB) was removed, the segfaults disappeared.

The limits should depend on ram, time, and filesystem type.  My
nightly backup is 27GB, and just tested 0.10.2 on a 3GB file.  Also I
just got a complaint that rdiff-backup is too slow on large files
(apparently one 4 GB file can be slower than a 165GB drive..).
