Yes, there is a vulnerable moment when upgrading from 0.10.x and
earlier to 0.12.x:  If the very first backup fails, then rdiff-backup
will want to regress, but cannot because 0.10.x didn't write any
metadata.

I can't infer from the error messages you mentioned the cause of the
original error, so it's possible it will happen again even if you fix
the current problem.  Probably though it is sufficient for you to
follow the instructions at:
