Hi, all,

I've been using rdiff-backup for about a year or so on some linux
systems, and it's really saved my butt a couple of times -- it's
fabulous! However, I've just put it on an OSX system, and have run into
a couple of (minor) problems.

The OS X machine is running Tiger, and rdiff-backup is the latest
(1.1.5), installed via Fink. There were no problems reported upon
installation. This machine is acting as the backup machine. The source
machine is running SUSE linux 10.0, and the rdiff-backup version is also
1.1.5. I've done many successful backups and restores from this linux
machine to other linux machines, so I'm quite certain that side works fine.

Last night, I backed up the SUSE machine to the OSX machine. The
vast majority of the files copied just fine, but a colleague killed the
process before it could complete. I tried running
rdiff-backup-statistics on the backup directory, but got the "no
matching sessions found" message. I didn't think much of it, as the
backup never completed, so I deleted the rdiff-backup-data directory on
the OSX machine and re-ran the backup. The process completed with no
errors (no messages of any sort), and the files which were missing the
first time are now present on the OSX machine.

However, now if I run rdiff-backup-statistics on the OSX machine,
it still gives me "no matching sessions found" (I know I'm running it on
the correct directory). I also tried "rdiff-backup -l", and it gives me
"Found 0 increments". Also I just tried to do a tiny sample restore
(from the linux machine). Here is the resulting message:

bash: line 1: rdiff-backup: command not found
Fatal Error: Truncated header string (problem probably originated remotely)

Couldn't start up the remote connection by executing

    ssh -C <my_username>@<server's ip address> rdiff-backup --server

Remember that, under the default settings, rdiff-backup must be
installed in the PATH on the remote system. See the man page for more
information on this. This message may also be displayed if the remote
version of rdiff-backup is quite different from the local version (1.1.5).

I'm not sure I trust this, because I have set up the PATH on that
machine to include /sw/bin (where rdiff-backup and
rdiff-backup-statistics are), and starting to type rdiff-b on the
command line will tab-complete properly. Also, wouldn't this same
message properly appear if the backup in the first place couldn't happen
(yet I can run that properly from the linux machine)?

Hopefully, someone can shed some light on this for me. It's not
horrendously important, however.

           Best wishes,
                      C.O.
