I'd feel very uncomfortable with an control key that would have such
drastic meaning as sending signals to processes.
stty -a shows me that Ctrl-\ will send a kill signal, Ctrl-Z will suspend.
Btw:
The manual says
bindkey -k F1 command
Make the F11 (not F1!) key an alternative screen
escape (besides ^A).
Would that work for you?
