Allow me to second Dave and say: Don't do that.  Terminals with different
$TERM types really are different, and get confused by changing $TERMs.
Most terminal emulators will set TERM themselves, so you souldn't need to
worr about it yourself.

The solution here lies either in customizing vim's config--if it's bolding
text that you don't want it to--or xterm's config--if the colors are just
too bright.  If you're using xterm itself (not gnome-terminal or rxvt or
something else), you might want to take a look at my color definitions at

I like somewhat more muted colors than xterm defaults to.
