Then possibly you don't have the pkgconfig package installed
or there is a problem with the installation.
Pkgconfig is a tool that (according to the man page) "returns
metainformation about installed libraries." The command I
told you to try should have printed the compiler flags needed
to build software using gtk+-2.0.
The ./configure script uses pkg-config to find GTK+.
