Hi,

the log editor acts directly on the content of the file. So when you
"hid" the colum, you in fact deleted the column from the file. When
you open the backup, make sure you have restored the show/hide setting
to your normal values, or you'll end up deleting those columns again.

The concept that you're missing is probably that Xlog can handle
multiple files at the same time, and each file can have different
show/hide setting. So keep your historical log in a file (or one file
per year, maybe), while logging your contest in a new file. The log
contest can have a streamlined setup. The only caveat is when you then
go to merge the files, you have to be careful that both have the same
columns, otherwise I think the one you select first wins (so if in the
first file you hide the name, the merged file will have it hidden
too). Make some experimentation with this process, and be sure to have
good backups.
