Ah, thanks.  When I do that, it also works for me, so I've committed
your patches.

Hm, one thing still doesn't work for me.  With the attached minimal tex
document and having parsed fancyhdr.sty, I get

Where's the bar pagestyle defined in the doc?  And why do you have it?
I think, I'll have to debug that a bit further.
