Speaking for avrdude, the latest CVS disables the doc build by default
which is reflected in my latest update to the FreeBSD port. This was
biting a number of folks as the doc packages needed to build the
documenation were many orders of magnitude larger and more complicated
than avrdude itself which was somewhat of a barrier to getting avrdude
built, especially for MacOS X. The man page is still available which
has 98% of the pdf documentation. If the additional doc is needed for
platforms that don't support man pages it can be built by adding
--enable-docs to the configure script.
