Good point.

I've been using

port install autoconf automake \
  libtool hidapi libftdi1 libusb libelf

to install all prerequisites (just checked that again). If you use
something else than Macports, translate that into the appropriate
packages of your package system.

If that works for you, we could extend INSTALL by a MacOS section.
