I think I may have still had the previous (old) area checked out and
didn't remove it before doing the checkout again (it's a long story :-).
Once I for certain cleaned out all the old remnants, I got a good (new)
checkout which built and installed properly (well, after I installed a
new makeinfo).

Even better, the Amanda problem is also fixed.
