That's right. But automake need autoconf later when you run it, so we check that prerequisite at configure-time. -- Alexandre Duret-LutzI still consider this behaviour a bug. What you talk about in your response is RUN time, not build time. Why don't you check prerequisites for earnest in the `install:' target; at least THAT would make sense to me ...
"fail early, fail often". Why should people waste time doing a build if they'll find they can't do the install doe to a condition detectable much earlier?
