If you know who generated the software distribution operating on your
servers, then you should be able to get the sources from them.

The strace output says /bin/uname read /proc/cpuinfo, but I don't see
how it computed "i686" from that.

The reason I'm asking is that in the past, people have suggested some
very ad hoc heuristics in this area, reading from /proc/cpuinfo, but
they tended to be kernel- or distribution-specific and were to some
extent a maintenance hassle.
