good shot, but it was not bash, but ksh - it seems that
ksh's echo shell buitin is buggy:

  $ ksh --version
    version         sh (AT&T Labs Research) 1993-12-28 r
  $ /bin/echo hello > /dev/full
  /bin/echo: write error: No space left on device
