Bugs in Linux

A certain bug has just come to my notice.I use Red Hat Linux version 7.0
(the kernel version is obviously different and better known to you people , 
may be 2.2.16 ? I am not sure)

I shall narrate what happened :

[sam @tryCo sam]expr 10/2 #output should be 5 on all Unixes
10/2
[sam @tryCo sam]a=22
[sam @tryCo sam]a= `expr $a`+10
[sam @tryCo sam]echo $a
22+10
[sam @tryCo sam]
[sam @tryCo sam]clear
[sam @tryCo sam]

Please help me , by advicing me on (at:   address@hidden):
(a)What you have done to solve / remedy this bug
(b)How I can remedy it on my system
