It enables the assembly of the DSP extensions to the SH instruction
set and disables the assembly of the (presumably conflicting) SH3E and
SH4 extensions.

I cases like this it is always best to examine the source code itself,
rather than relying upon the online manuals. The source file
gas/doc/c-sh.texi for example contains this:
@item -dsp
Enable sh-dsp insns, and disable sh3e / sh4 insns.

Indeed it should, since it is for the old 2.10 release. One day...
