Hi Bruno:

Since I never use java, I was not aware it is used by some tools. So
JAVA_HOME has not been set. After removing /usr/bin/javac (link to
/usr/bin/javac -> ../java/bin/javac and link to /usr/java -> java1.1) I was
able to build gettext.

Your 'javac' program (/usr/bin/javac) appears to be dysfunctional if
the JAVA_HOME environment is not set. This is unusual: the Sun JDK
1.1.x javac takes JAVA_HOME only as a hint, and the Sun JDK >= 1.2
doesn't look at JAVA_HOME at all.

The problem _is_ in your environment. Either you set JAVA_HOME, or you
remove /usr/bin/javac from your PATH.
