Yes, but for some reason I prefer to stay with the .po file format for
the moment. But I'll check out available database solutions.

Yes, I use this approach for merging back the corrections. But that's
not what is required to solve the special job I described. For
step c. I'm using an awk script; the interesting part is dealing with
plural form messages ;-)

Yes, this could help, but for my special application it would be
overkill. For sure, the diff'ing feature will help translators.
