Thanks for this reminder. I think I didn't update the .cvsignore files in
4 years or so...

The autoconf manual documents a way to get rid of this cache directory.
This autom4te.cache directory exists in the first place because m4 is slow
through the m4sugar layer. Akim Demaille told me that the goal was to
extend GNU m4 so that m4sugar would not be necessary any more. Then autoconf
and automake would become fast again, and the cache directory would not be
needed any more.
I'm not adding autom4te.cache to the .cvsignore, so that you are reminded
of the work to be done on GNU m4 :-)

I thought that Paul Eggert had submitted, years ago, a patch through which
only a single stamp-h would be created, and no stamp-h1, stamp-h2 etc. any
more. No?
