Thanks for the response.

I tested again on an iMac G5 (PowerPC-based) and a MacBook (i386- 
based) and was not able to reproduce the issue. I discovered earlier  
today that Apple's i686-apple-darwin10-gcc-4.2.1 will ONLY compile  
i386 and i686 binaries, ignoring the -arch switch. Instead, using /usr/ 
bin/gcc-4.2 will correctly call powerpc- or i686-apple-darwin10- 
gcc-4.2.1 depending on the host.
