It's quite simple. We have a text file with entries like:

#: analysis.c:44
msgid "Beginner"
msgstr ""

#: analysis.c:45
msgid "Novice"
msgstr ""

#: analysis.c:46
msgid "Intermediate"
msgstr ""

In msgstr you fill in the Dutch translation. "analysis.c:44" means that
this particular string can be located in the file analysis.c line 44.

For example, in Danish:

#: analysis.c:44
msgid "Beginner"
msgstr "Begynder"

#: analysis.c:45
msgid "Novice"
msgstr "Novice"

#: analysis.c:46
msgid "Intermediate"
msgstr "Mellemklasse"

There is approximately 1850 of these entries in the file... There is
work in progress on a Danish and a German translation. The Danish
translation is 30% finished whereas the German one is 85% finished.
The translation is partly complicated by the fact the there are changes
to gnubg quite often; adding or changing texts.

I'm not sure what the status is regarding translations in the Windows
build. Øystein, is the windows version build and installed with the
i18n stuff?

Anyway, in principle, you just need a plain text editor (like notepad,
but emacs is recommended). If you want to test your translation you'll
some extra setup.

Also, it's important to be consistent, e.g., using the same phrases
through-out the program.
