For someone who's had a long time dislike for vi and modal editing, I
find myself surprised to say:

Have a mode setting button/command - when set to marked, any command
where the use of marking makes sense will be restricted to only those
moves that have been marked by the user. It's easier than trying to
provide two variant of every command.
