[Bug-gnupod] bug: gnupod, iTunesSD, LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Hi,

Just got an iPod Shuffle yesterday. Tried the gnupod stuff first,
couldn't get it working. Then had to break the seal on the apple disk
and run it under windows (don't have a mac, sorry) to make sure the
hardware was functional. It was.

So I dig in deep with google and a hex editor, and find that where
there's supposed to be a 5aa501, I see an extra byte: 5ac2a501.

I'm very much a beginner at perl programming; I've had the camel book
for about a year and, by coincidence, started reading it in depth a
couple of weeks ago. But I couldn't see why the code that was there
would get an extra byte inserted.

I don't know if it was intuition or what, but I tried running it with
the LANG environment variable unset, and I found the extra byte was no
longer there! Under RedHat 8, LANG is normally set to en_US.UTF-8 for
me. (And also under RH 9, I believe... )

Like I said, I don't know much perl, and I cannot understand why the
locale setting would affect this. But maybe somebody else can help
figure out the cause / fix for this, given the above information?

Thanks!

--> Steve Wahl
