I don't have the book right in front of me, but it has some enahncements
that aren't in the manual that is included with the GNU Make distribution
(notably the inclusion of the essay "Why Free SOftware Needs Free
Documentation"), and I recall that the book references version 3.81 of GNU
Make not 3.80.  Which may be a bug.

I think the closest thing to what I'm looking for is here:
