Follow-up Comment #2, bug #64061 (project groff):
It turns out some of the "excess" escaping isn't excess, and the "\n" is not
only portable but also necessary. (Hint: sed never sees the "\n".)
More on this when I finish proving things out and have a tested patch ready.
