Thanks for that advice.  I had done this when  tried to install GRUB (should 
have put that in my earlier posting)

I tried setting root to both my linux (hd0,4) and also my fat partition (hd0,0) 
with the same result both times after running setup.  Will debug mode give me 
more information?
