I put a 3c905C-TXM in the machine and tried your patches as well as going back 
to 0.93. It looks like my system(s) don't like grub at all! I would guess that 
your patches are fine, I don't have an e1000 in another type of system so I 
can't test them elsewhere.

I have a the Intel E7501 board. The 82546EB is onboard. Booted via lilo but 
really want to use grub with dhcp/tftp support!
