GRUB 2 will support both. :-)

It will be better, IMO, to use the new standard from the beginning I
think.  The main reason for this is that it is still being developed,
so you can influence some things there.  Another reason is that the
focus is also on portability.

The drawback is that it is still under development and not ready
yet.  But I am quite sure it will not take *that* long.
